Local recording
Local meeting recording lets you capture meetings directly from your desktop, without a bot or notetaker joining the call. Similar to local note-taking tools like Granola or Notion Meeting Notes, it captures the transcript from your call quietly in the background. The recording captures both your system audio and microphone input, creating a transcript that's automatically saved to your meeting record. All audio processing happens locally on your machine - only the final transcript is uploaded to Clarify.
Consent
Laws vary by location, so if you’re recording or transcribing a meeting with Clarify, make sure everyone’s in the loop. A quick heads-up and consent from participants keeps things clear and compliant.

If the meeting is imminent, you can navigate to the meeting in the system tray and click "Join and record" or if you are already in the meeting, just "Start recording".
During recording
While recording locally, you will see our recording widget in the top right, you can expand it by hovering over it.

Recording controls
While recording, you have several options:
- Pause: Temporarily stop the recording
- Resume: Continue a paused recording
- Stop: End and save the recording.
- Stop and discard: Stop and delete all local recording data. Nothing will upload to Clarify.
While paused the widget will look like this:

After recording
Navigating to the record you can see the recording progress through these stages:
- Processing
- Transcribing
- Uploading
A progress indicator will show you which stage the recording is in.

Audio and local recording settings
There are some configurable settings for local recording available via the desktop settings page in the desktop app. The two relevant sections are:
Audio permissions
This section manages the audio recording capabilities required for meeting transcription
Contains two permission settings:
- Transcribe my voice: Controls microphone access for recording the user's voice
- Transcribe other people's voices: Controls system audio access for recording other participants' voices
Each permission shows either a green checkmark when enabled or an "Enable" button when disabled.
