Desktop app and Chrome extension troubleshooting

Written by Michael Simmons

When the Clarify desktop app or Chrome extension isn't behaving as expected, this guide covers the most common issues and fixes.

macOS desktop app

First step for most issues

Click the Clarify icon in your menu bar → Clear Application Data → Relaunch. This resolves most local state and cache issues without affecting your data or recordings.

Check for updates: Clarify menu bar → Check for updates. Some issues are fixed in recent app versions.

Requires macOS 14 or later.

Recording is audio-only (no video)

Video vs. audio-only is determined the moment you start recording — the app checks once whether a meeting window is open and doesn't re-check.

Use "Join and record" from the menu bar — it waits up to 30 seconds for a meeting window to be detected. "Start recording" and "Quick Record" don't wait, so if the meeting window wasn't open or in focus at that moment, the recording will be audio-only.

To avoid audio-only recordings:

  1. Open your meeting platform (Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams) first

  2. Make sure the meeting window is visible on screen

  3. Click Join and record from the Clarify menu bar

Recording completed but nothing appeared in Clarify

Recordings upload after the meeting ends and take 2–5 minutes per hour to process. The app must remain open for the upload to complete.

If the recording is consistently disappearing without any error message, try Clear Application Data → Relaunch and check again. If it keeps happening, contact support — there is a known intermittent issue where a recording file isn't fully written before upload begins.

Desktop tray stuck on an ended meeting

If the menu bar tray shows a meeting as ongoing after it ended, or "Join and record" opens an old meeting link:

  1. Click Clarify in the menu bar → Check for updates and install any available update

  2. If already on the latest version, quit and relaunch the app

This issue was fixed in a June 2026 desktop app update — updating resolves it.

Meeting notifications not appearing or firing at wrong times

Meeting notifications can miss or misfire if:

  • The app wasn't running when the meeting started — the app must be open to send notifications

  • The meeting was rescheduled after Clarify already picked it up

  • The meeting was declined or deleted after the notification was scheduled

If a notification doesn't appear, open the Clarify app and use the Meetings tab to start a Quick Record manually.

Desktop recorder doesn't auto-record

The macOS desktop recorder requires a manual action to start each recording. It does not auto-record based on your calendar settings — that's the cloud notetaker bot.

  • Scheduled meeting: Click Start recording from the notification when the meeting starts, or use the menu bar

  • Unscheduled call: Click the Clarify menu bar icon → Quick Record

Chrome extension

Extension doesn't work in Arc browser

The Clarify Chrome extension requires the Chrome Side Panel API, which Arc browser has not implemented. The extension will appear installed but the panel won't open.

Fix: Use Chrome or Edge instead of Arc. This is an Arc browser limitation — there is no workaround.

The extension works in Chrome, Edge, and any Chromium-based browser that supports the Chrome Side Panel API. Firefox and Safari are not supported.

LinkedIn profile isn't showing Clarify data

The extension only works on specific LinkedIn page types. On unsupported pages, the panel loads but shows nothing.

Supported:

  • Profile pages (linkedin.com/in/...)

  • People search results

  • Sales Navigator lead profiles and people search

Not supported: company pages, home feed, messaging, jobs, Sales Navigator company pages.

If you're on a supported page and still seeing nothing:

  1. Click the Clarify logo in your toolbar and confirm you're signed in

  2. Reload the LinkedIn page

  3. If still not working, contact support

"Configure" shows in Connected Apps (expected)

The Chrome extension shows "Configure" under Settings → Connected Apps rather than "Connected." This is normal — the extension doesn't send a connection status back to Clarify the way OAuth integrations do.

If the extension is opening and showing contact data, it's working correctly.

Error saving a contact to Clarify

If the extension shows an error when saving a contact from LinkedIn:

  1. Click the Clarify logo in the toolbar → sign out, then sign back in

  2. Try saving again

If the error persists after signing back in, contact support.

Keyboard shortcut

Open the Clarify panel with Cmd+Shift+Y (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+Y (Windows/Linux).
